The ArtistThe past few years I have been working with locally sourced pigment, collecting samples from both Devon and Cornwall.
Recently, with Plymouth University I have been participating in the Peninsula Arts' Soil Culture exhibition. I am in a working studio within the gallery and more details about this can be found on Peninsula Arts blog and Plymouth Culture's website. |
My WorkAs an artist, I am constantly trying to diversify the range of techniques I use in my work. This often means experimenting with new and innovative mediums in an aim to find processes I enjoy working with. In past work, I have explored using photography, installation and textiles but I have found that I am most captivated by painting and the vast range of techniques used to manipulate paint.
I have examined the work of many artists such as Joan Mitchell and Sam Francis to gain a better knowledge of their techniques, which I then apply that to my own practice. This led to my work taking an alternative path, where I now gather soils and minerals which I transform into pigment to create my own paint. This method is much like Peter Ward's who makes his own paint from North Devon soils. I have recently had the opportunity to work closely with Peter Ward, and have thoroughly enjoyed this experience. In experimenting with the different components of the painting process, I find myself working in a incremental and iterative manner, similar to that of a scientist. Repeated but slightly varying each time, my trial and error method of exploring the essence of the painting process is gradually allowing me to both fully grasp and exceed the limits of using paint as a primary medium. |
