Stage 2 - 2013/2014Earth and MineralsI began this project by producing my own paint as this is the medium that has long been an interest of mine. I intended to focus on the use of natural pigments extracted from earthen materials through mechanical processes. The materials I used to produce the pigments were locally sourced from areas in and around Cornwall, as I have always had strong connections with the region. I have explored and experimented with a range of traditional and alternative binding mediums and discovered how subtle manipulations of the paint making processes influenced my final outcome. With this I ended up with over 20 swatch like paintings which helped me to create my latest work. Using the swatches I was able to create paintings with paint that I knew would work better than others.

Paintings
These are some of the paintings I started to do after I had experimented with the pigment. I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the place using the pigments that I had collected from there. The different paints I made with the pigments were:
|
Place: Wembury Beach
Pigments used from: Cutcrew Cornwall, Mount Batten, Dawlish, Cawsands Binder: Egg Tempera Each ring represents each place that I got the pigment from. Five of the rings represent a place and the sixth is the painting in the middle. To measure the gap for each ring I plotted the points on a map and took the two furthest away. Place: Dawlish
Pigments used from: Cutcrew Cornwall, Mount Batten, Dawlish, Cawsands Binder: Linseed oil and Beeswax with white spirit. Like the previous painting, this one has less rings. This painting gives the illusion that the landscape is coming out of the border it has been placed in because of the way the wax has spread. Place: Wembury Beach
Pigments used from: Cutcrew Cornwall, Mount Batten, Dawlish, Cawsands Binder: Egg Tempera This painting, rather than having rings like a frame, I have marked all the locations on a map. Each point on the map has all the pigments that I found there. I gathered the most from Wembury/Haybrook Bay. |
